North Charleston

North Charleston has transformed from what was once a military community into a thriving metropolis with an international airport, Amtrak station, performing arts center, popular museums, and a plethora of shopping and dining options. In 2010, North Charleston received the Award for Municipal Excellence from the National League of Cities for its Sustainable Urban Revitalization project.

The Park Circle neighborhood has been one of the direct beneficiaries of the revitalization project, and in 2012 it was named by This Old House magazine as a “Best Old House Neighborhood.” Built between the 1920s and the 1960s, this modest and affordable area includes Craftsman bungalows, Colonial Revivals, and brick ranch-style houses. Many residents take advantage of the Mixson Bath and Racquet Club located here. An alternative to the traditional swim and social club, Mixson encourages a casual, relaxed atmosphere and features a heated, saltwater pool, custom water features for kids, nine private cabanas, a wellness center, and a restaurant. The locally owned businesses in the small downtown district and the new elementary and performing arts schools in the area draw entrepreneurs, first-time home buyers, and families with children to the Park Circle neighborhood.

With its abundance of sidewalks and front porches, The Oak Terrace Preserves encourages neighborly interactions and builds a strong sense of community amongst those who live here. The area combines the charm of the 19th and 20th centuries with groundbreaking innovation to bring the nostalgic allure of Charleston into the modern day. Go green easily in this neighborhood; it’s peppered with ample trees, parks, and plentiful greenspace.

During the summer months, residents of Wando Woods enjoy the shade of majestic oaks and magnolia trees as well as the enticing waters of the Ashley River. Conveniently located just outside I-526, this neighborhood is fifteen minutes from downtown Charleston. Established as a quiet, family-oriented neighborhood, Wando Woods is an ideal place to raise children and experience all that the area has to offer.

Developed in 1985 as one of Charleston’s first gated communities, The Park at River’s Edge contains condos, townhomes, single family homes and triplexes. It encompasses several neighborhoods within its gates, each with a distinct personality to suit every kind of real estate need. Shopping centers, schools, and transportation hubs are all within easy driving distance.

For those with children, North Charleston is home to Academic Magnet High School, ranked as the seventh best public school in the United States by Newsweek in 2008.

Aside from the diversity of its neighborhoods, attractions include the 14,000-seat North Charleston Coliseum, home of the ice hockey team the South Carolina Stingrays and host to a variety of rock concerts as well as Broadway shows. In addition, the Tanger Outlets provide a variety of affordable shopping and dining selections to residents and visitors alike.
